Durango Area

The City of Durango, at 6,512 ft. in elevation, was established in 1881 when the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad decided to build a track to Silverton to transport ore from the mountains to smelters in Durango.

Many of the original buildings constructed by Durango’s pioneers are still in use today and can be seen in the historic districts of Third Avenue and Main Avenue. Rio Grande Land, located at the far southern end of Main, contains the restored depot built in 1881. The Strater Hotel, built in 1887, and a reflection of the town’s prosperity, remains a central attraction in downtown Durango.
The Durango

Amenity migration is the single biggest factor that draws increasingly more individuals to invest and live in the Durango area. The area is surrounded by the San Juan National Forest and the Weminuche Wilderness and offers an abundance of outdoor activities, including golfing, kayaking, rafting, mountain and road biking, hiking, camping, skiing, rock-climbing, hunting, and fishing just to name a few. The San Juan Mountains also offer spectacular scenery and fantastic geological sites.

The area is also a heaven for athletes, artists, horse and equestrian enthusiasts, and retirees.

Parks are favorites for our community, with 32 parks maintained by the City of Durango.

The climate is considered ideal thanks to moderate temperatures and distinctly beautiful seasons. Winters are generally mild, sunny and dry, and snowfall at higher elevations is typically great for skiing. Fall is just a breathtaking season in the area. Summer temperatures seldom climb above the high 80s and spring is characterized by afternoon showers and blooming wildflowers.
